VirtualBox 7.2.2 Adds Support for KVM APIs on Linux Kernel 6.16 and Newer – 9to5Linux

VirtualBox 7.2.2 is out as the first maintenance release of the latest VirtualBox 7.2 series for this open-source, free, and cross-platform virtualization solution from Oracle.

For Linux users, VirtualBox 7.2.2 introduces support for using KVM APIs on Linux kernel 6.16 and newer for acquiring and releasing VT-x on Linux hosts and updates Linux Guest Additions by fixing an issue when VBoxClient was reporting that it is unable to load shared libraries on start.

For networking, VirtualBox 7.2.2 adds a new experimental type of e1000 adapter (82583V), which requires the ICH9 chipset as MSIs are not supported by PIIX3, and fixes a potential issue where a nameserver in the 127/8 network could have been passed to the guest.

Several GUI improvements are also present in this release, including forcing the XDG Desktop Portal platform theme on Linux systems when org.freedesktop.portal.Desktop DBus service is available and support for Windows 11 hosts to use the legacy light/dark themes from Windows 10.

In addition, several VBox Manager crashes were addressed, which occurred while removing all virtual machines from the VM list, when attempting to show error notifications too early, and when a virtual machine has a lot of snapshots, as well as a freeze on Linux hosts at startup or while attempting to add a virtual machine.

VBox Manager also received a fix for an issue where error notifications couldn’t be displayed after deleting a snapshot. On top of that, VirtualBox 7.2.2 improves the VBox VM network status-bar indicator tooltip (IP address) to update on guest additions change.

Among other changes, VirtualBox 7.2.2 fixes the passing through USB devices exposed over USB/IP, adds the virtual USB webcam to the open source base package, improves high CPU usage for idling virtual machines on ARM hosts, and fixes an issue with the TPM device not working with certain guests.

A couple of bug fixes are also present for macOS hosts, including a fix for internal networking, including NAT networks on macOS, and a fix for a crash on ARM hosts that occurred when starting the virtual machine.

Check out the changelog on the official website for more details about the changes included in VirtualBox 7.2.2, which is available for download as a universal binary that you can install on virtually any GNU/Linux distribution, or as dedicated binaries for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora Linux, openSUSE, and Oracle Linux.
